RELIGIOUS ART | NEWS OF WEEK

Posted on 02:00 by john mical
ALPHA OMEGA ARTS
By TAHLIB
This was a big week, my religious art family! As we made art purchases for the holiday season, we also enjoyed our first Christmas Opera; went to see "The Hobbit" with our pastor (loved it); watched the funeral pageantry of the homegoing for Nelson Mandela; plodded through the white snow of winter; picked up that power2give grant check you funded; and joined a NEA press conference on arts journalism. My favorite part was the selection of Pope Francis as TIME's Person of Year 2013. To capture the pope's essence, TIME commissioned a portrait by Chicago-based artist Jason Seiler (above), making it my NEWS OF WEEK. Much has been made about his humility and gentleness. What do you see?

In other religious art news from across the USA, and around the world:
  • Buddhist Art of Week: Redevelopment threatens ancient Buddhist temple. [More News]
  • Christian Art of Week: "Bandits & Saints of Brazil" in Detroit ends January 5. [More News]
  • Hindu Art of Week: Hindu homosexuality comes under attack by extremists. [More News]
  • Islamic Art of Week: "Prince meets Muslim holyman" at Saint Louis museum. [More News]
  • January 2014 Meetup: "King Breakfast" in Cincinnati on January 20. [More Meetups]
We are all members, united in the search for human meaning through art from the religious imagination. For us, it's more than Art. It's Religion. We follow artists who dare to explore religious ideas with their creative vision. When you follow religious artists, you join others who do the same. Some of us join as one of the "Collectors" of the A&O Project who make the final decisions; others as "Curators" when they donate to the Artist Fund; and most of us join as "Subscribers" to this "free" weekly newsletter; (or follow on: Tumblr, Twitter, Facebook, or Soundcloud). RELIGIOUS ART | NEWS OF WEEK

Join us on Friday for "Amahl and the Night Visitors", a Christmas Opera written for Americans. I was inspired to order tickets for the Indianapolis Opera's 2014 production following the setup of our Nativity scene at home. Written in 1951 by Gian Carlo Menotti, it was first performed on December 24, 1951, and he said it was inspired by his forgotten childhood. In Menotti's childhood in Italy, Three Kings, and not Santa Claus delivered Christmas gifts, but when he came to America he forgot it. One day however, walking through the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the memories rushed back when he saw Hieronymus Bosch's "The Adoration of the Magi" (above), making it my NEWS OF WEEK.

In other religious art news from across the USA, and around the world:
  • Buddhist Art of Week: Liuligongfang’s "Buddha in Glass" for Bodhi Day. [More News]
  • Christian Art of Week: Norman Rockwell's "Saying Grace" sells for $46 Million. [More News]
  • Hindu Art of Week: Smithsonian's Yoga exhibit spotlights church-state debate. [More News]
  • Islamic Art of Week: U of Michigan to exhibit 11 centuries of Islamic Art. [More News]
  • Judaic Art of Week: Metropolitan Museum displays Judaica for Hanukkah. [More News]

Today, we mourn the loss of neighbors, friends, siblings, lovers, activists, and American religious artists like Keith Haring, David Wojnarowicz, and Adrian Kellard, all taken by AIDS. December 1st is the universal holyday known as World AIDS Day, and that's why "For the Record" (above) is my NEWS OF WEEK. This Day With(out) Art installation is on view through December 13 at Visual AIDS, an arts organization in NYC. Created by the gay women artists collective: fierce pussy, "For the Record" uses variations of the phrase “If he/she were alive today…,” and asks us to reflect, remember; and to consider what would you/they be doing today if...?

In other religious art news from across the USA, and around the world:
  • Buddhist Art of Week: Paula Brett's "Candalas" leaving Florida for NYC. [More News]
  • Christian Art of Week: Survey shows 'bullying' of Christian employees in Arts. [More News]

Holydays remind us why we follow our choosen spiritual paths, and deaths are often associated with those holydays. The anniversaries of the deaths of John F. Kennedy, a modern humanist; Aldous Huxley, an Eastern pantheist; and C.S. Lewis, a Christian apologist have all been in the news this week. However today, 23 million Sikh's worldwide commemorate a holyday, and that's why "Guru Tegh Bahadur Martyrdom Day" (above) is my NEWS OF WEEK. In 1675, Guru Tegh Bahadar, the ninth Sikh Guru died in defense of the religious freedom of Hindus against Islamic conversion. In this week's artwork, the artist places the Guru between three groupings: other religious martyrs; powerful persecutors; and the cowering bystanders. The painting, like the holyday, is an invitation. Which path would you choose?

In other religious art news from across the USA, and around the world:
  • Buddhist Art of Week: ‘Korea’s Golden Kingdom,’ at Metropolitan Museum. [More News]
  • Christian Art of Week: Niccolo Cosme's exhibition in NYC through January. [More News]

RELIGIOUS ART | NEWS OF WEEK

This week's disasters in the Philippines and for Healthcare Reform, are reminders of "Paradise Lost", a 17th century poem where Satan works his way in to bring destruction to the experiment known as the Garden of Eden. John Milton's epic poem is captured on a grand scale at three gallery venues in NYC this week; and that's why "Paradise Lost" (above) by Raqib Shaw at Pace Gallery is my NEWS OF WEEK. Shaw's dazzling and monumental fusion of Hindu man-beasts with the colossal sin & death story of "Genesis" induces feelings of complete awe and despair; but it also glimmers with hope. What do you do when your Paradise feels Lost?

In other religious art news from across the USA, and around the world:

  • Christian Art of Week: Broadway's Fantastical "Big Fish" to Close on December 29. [More News]

During a week when legislatures in Hawaii and Illinois, took the risk to legalize gay marriage, a painting of a gay couple walking hand-in-hand into church was named as the 2013 winner of the A&O Prize - Student Art Contest. That's why "Risk" (above) by Bailee Brantley, an 11th grade student at Crispus Attucks High School in Indianapolis is my NEWS OF WEEK. The celebratory week of A&O Prizes; dazzling exhibit, "Religious Risks" of works by thirty professional artists (plus one student winner); concluded with readings by three poet honorees, and an inspiring group dialogue. The entire occasion also inspired $2,500 in donations for artist honorariums. The momentum for risk-taking is strong this month, so what religious risk will you take before the exhibit ends on November 29th?

In other religious art news from across the USA, and around the world:

During Thursday's preview of the exhibit, a visitor from the Princeton University Art Museum approached me and said, "Whether you believe, or not, this show is amazing." That's the reaction visitors are sharing about the inaugural exhibition, "Alpha & Omega: Religious Risks" which opened on Friday as part of the Spirit & Place Festival, and that's why the Alpha Omega Prize (above) is my NEWS OF WEEK. Thirty-one artists: 27 professionals; three poets; and one student winner of the 3rd annual scholarship prize, have been curated to amaze. Since 2008, the Alpha & Omega Project for Contemporary Religious Arts has celebrated the intersections of art & faith with prizes, and 2013 culminates with artist awards on Saturday, November 9. Will you please join me in making a gift to the prize fund, and meet me in Indianapolis?

While receiving artworks for our upcoming exhibition exploring "Religious Risk", one artist asserted they did not have a written statement to explain their work. Why not? "I am an Atheist," they responded, and that absence makes Neha Choksi's “Iceboat” (above) my NEWS OF WEEK. Dressed in the white of a pilgrim, she is videotaped rowing across water in a melting boat of ice. It made me think of atheism, a subject Oprah explored with swimmer Diana Nyad; and Bill Maher celebrated with scientist Richard Dawkins; but what is absence? Choksi is not the artist who dropped off the artwork this week, but in a world where atheists, skeptics and non-believers want to be seen as both different and acceptable, she does help frame the question of what is gained or lost by melting away?

In other religious art news from across the USA, and around the world:

SIX years ago, in NYC's trendy Lincoln Center area, I discovered the contemporary design of the Museum of Biblical Art (MOBIA), and it is my NEWS OF WEEK. The museum is a leader in today's movement of world-class art explorations of religious ideas by museums and galleries, and it's happening in NYC, Indianapolis, and across the country. This week, MOBIA named a new director (it's second); opened a new exhibit in NYC; and welcomed visitors in Memphis to its African American religious art exhibit with works such as Jared Small's “The Good Samaritan” (above). After decades of art world skepticism, what do you credit for this renewal of interest in religious art?

My college roommate, Kumar was great at celebrating, and he credited the many Hindu festivals of his boyhood in India as the reason that he was so good at it. Navarati is one of three such festivals this month which makes Manjari Sharma's "Goddess Durga" (above), my NEWS OF WEEK. The Navaratri festival is dedicated to the worship of the Hindu deity "Durga", or the Goddess of Victory of Good over Evil. Since ancient times, festival artists have painted or sculpted depictions of Goddess Durga, but photography is unique. In this age of selfies, and Instagram, what celebrations of good over evil are you photographing today?

As our leaders squabbled in Washington, D.C. over what they treasure most, a museum in Utah hung Heinrich Hofmann's "Christ and the Rich Young Ruler" (above), and that is my NEWS OF WEEK. This painting, done by Hofmann in 1888, illustrates one of Jesus' riddles where he attempts to penetrate through to a man’s idolatry by causing him to think: "Sell all that you have and distribute to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me’ (Luke 18:22)." In Christianity, idolatry is what is treasured more than Christ, and this man chose his wealth. What does Hofmann's "Rich Young Ruler" say to us today?

The Buddha taught that inspiration comes in groups. "The virtues, like the Muses, are always seen in groups. A good principle was never found solitary in any breast," said Buddha. This week, the world's attention focuses on the grouping of over 1,500 artworks from 47 countries. For 19 days in Grand Rapids, Michigan, over 400,000 visitors will descend on this city and vote for their favorite artworks in churches, galleries, museums, banks, bike shops, and even the riverfront. It's not a permanent collection but it is a group moment, and that makes "Tall Buddha" (above) by Philip Lynch at ArtPrize my NEWS OF WEEK.

Jerry is white but chose a pastor who is a black. Angela is an Evangelical, but stood alone to defend the Hindu girl being bullied at her school. Tom is straight but painted Jesus waving a Gay rainbow flag, and then delivered it to his Catholic priest. Not every American thrives on divisiveness and competition. Instead many of us choose community-building. Frankly, I hate the win/lose outcomes of competitions, but I'm inspired by prizes, events, and occasions that celebrate risk-takers who bridge divides. The ArtPrize, Burning Man, Fringe Festivals, and our own A&O Prize are such celebrations; and that makes the Race Prize from the Spirit & Place Festival (above) our  NEWS OF WEEK.

In other religious art news from across the USA, and around the world:
  1. A&O Invitational: Participate in "First & Last: Religious Risks" in November [Ends Oct. 1, 2013]
  2. Hoosier Students: Register a High School student to win a college scholarship. [Ends Oct. 5, 2013]
  3. American Clergy: Nominate a strong advocate for artistic freedom. [Ends Oct. 15, 2013]
  4. American Museum: Nominate an exhibit that inspired religious dialogue. [Ends Oct. 15, 2013]
  5. American Artwork: Nominate most impactful contemporary artwork of 2013. [Ends Oct. 15, 2013]

Rosh Hashanah was this past week, and my CEO surprised me by taking off both days. Yes, he is Jewish but he also claims to be anti-religious, so it was a surprise. How do you deny religion yet still abide by religious prohibitions such as "not-working" on holydays? I believe he is religious but wants to hide (and protect) certain parts of himself, even in this city of 2 million Jews. I believe he honors these High Holydays because they allow him to reveal his true self to himself. Public denials linked to contradictory practices make Elaine Reichek's "Sampler" (above) at The Jewish Museum of New York my NEWS OF WEEK.

In other religious art news from across the USA, and around the world:
